Brief Description
As
the world's largest corporation, Walmart is using sustainability as a means to
become more efficient and profitable at every level of the company They have
set three over arching sustainability goals: to be supplied 100% by renewable
energy, to create zero waste, and to sell products that sustain the
environment.
Our Challenge
Find a way to drive sustainability
throughout their organization and create and implement a plan to integrate
sustainability into the mindset of their culture in order to reach their
aggressive sustainability goals.
Strategic Response
Personal Sustainability Project (PSP)
- Pulled the concept of sustainability out of an environmentally-focused framework and centered it on the individual
- Developed bi-lingual programs and internal communications platform
- Designed a variety of custom videos, PSP TV, printed training guides, a magazine, posters, and newsletters
- Leveraged a store-based community social marketing approach
- Results
Results:
- Over half of Walmart's 1.3 million associates have voluntarily adopted their own PSP
- Walmart associates collectively lost 184,315 pounds; walked/biked/swam a total of 1,100,000 miles; recycled over 9 million pounds of aluminum, glass, paper and plastic; and organized more than 35,000 PSP Idea Groups in various stores
- In addition: More than 19,000 associates quit smoking as a result of PSP and during one campaign, Walmart saw sales of sustainable products increase by $20M in one month
- In Walmart Canada, "pulse surveys" of employee engagement increased by 15% following the roll-out of PSP. 73% of associates believe PSP has a positive effect on the workplace and they started over 160 local community initiatives
