Create & Impact 2013 – A Saatchi S Team Bike Rideby Katherine on July 3, 2013
In June, Publicis Groupe launched ‘Create & Impact 2013,’ a campaign to encourage all Groupe agencies around the globe to celebrate World Environment Day and participate in CSR activities in their communities. To do our part, Saatchi & Saatchi S decided to take a community bike ride and check out some of San Francisco’s most innovative and sustainable sites.
Our first stop was [freespace], which is a temporary community center that was born out of last month’s National Day of Civic Hacking. Their mission is to “foster creativity, civic innovation and community through the gift of free space.” They were able to secure a one-month lease of a 14,000 square foot warehouse for just one dollar. Since then, the space has taken off and has hosted free yoga classes, a bike share program, a community garden, open mic nights, book clubs and more. Thankfully, [freespace] was able to raise enough money to pay for July rent, so we will be lucky enough to enjoy their free community for one more month.
The next stop on our tour was the Mission Community Market, a year-round, non-profit community market that takes place every Thursday in the Mission district of San Francisco. The market supports farmers, local small businesses and after school programs. We were lucky enough to come across Urban Sprouts, where we got a free lesson on what makes our fruits and veggies nutritious, and learned all about the work they’re doing through school gardens to help San Francisco’s under-served neighborhoods learn about nutrition and healthy living.
Their volunteers were so compelling we couldn’t help but stop for a team photo. We had a great afternoon and highly recommend taking a bike ride through streets you’ve only driven. It’s incredible to get a different perspective on your own neighborhood.
